A 2008 study from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy reported that 21% of teen girls and 18% of teen boys have sent/ posted nude or semi-nude images of themselves. In more than two-thirds of the schools, school principals were aware of at least one case of non-consensual forwarding of personal erotic photos. Measures taken were mostly informing the parents of all involved and a “guided exchange” between the involved students. The consequences for the affected students were reported to be social withdrawal, psychological suffering, school performance problems, and experiences with cyberbullying. Adolescents who sent explicit photos of themselves to others during their second year of high school were more likely to say that they had engaged in sexual activity the following year than other adolescents. More than one-quarter of teens engage in sexting and those who send explicit photos of themselves are more likely to become sexually active a year later, according to a study published on Monday.
